Design Clinic Scheme

The Design Clinic Scheme for Design Expertise to MSMEs, is an unique and ambitious design intervention scheme by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India.

The objective of the Design Clinic Scheme is to enhance industry competitiveness and productivity with the help of design intervention and application at various functional levels. The scheme is structured to provide design related help through design awareness seminar, design awareness programme and design projects to give design inputs to products and services to MSMEs to enhance competitiveness. The scheme provides help through financial assistance at different stages for better implementation of scheme and design awareness.

ARCH Academy of Design has undertaken a design awareness and development programme for the jewelry cluster in Jaipur.
 
The scheme involves the following steps:
1.Design Awareness Seminar
2.Design Awareness Programmes and Workshops

3. Design Projects (handled by Design Professionals)

Design Awareness Seminar on " Materials, Methods and Trends: The Jewelry Industry”
Date: January 4th, 2010

The seminar began at 2 30 p m with Lunch. The guest speakers and dignitaries, as also Gayatri Singh, North Zone Co ordinator, NID and V K Sharma and Ajay Sharma, MSME, were also present.

After the exhibition walk through, which showcased the works of ARCH students, the seminar began with an introductory speech by Mamta Mantri. She introduced the objectives and intent of the seminar, underscoring the value of design development as a major instrument of change, a prerequisite for the industry.

Archana Surana welcomed and felicitated the chief guests and other speakers on the dais. She introduced ARCH and undermined on the role of academia towards design development.

Gayatri Singh explained the design clinic scheme, its structure, process and benefits to the industry and urged them to avail of the benefits introduced by the MSME and Govt of India.

V K Sharma also emphasized on the value of design along with IPR and GI, and urged the industry people to come forward to take full advantage of the scheme.

Rajiv Jain, Chairman, GJEPC, spoke on Jaipur as the hub of the jewelry industry and was very optimistic about the future of the city in terms of the growth rate. He also reinstated his support to the scheme.

Rajneesh Bhandari, MD, Rhaea Gems, is an expert on gems treatment. He made his presentation on "Innovation and latest developments in Gems and Jewelry Industry". He explained that it is possible to use innovative multi-materials like copper, diachronite, composites, in making new forms and shapes in jewelry design. The fact that newer varieties in gemstones can be created by treating them in a variety of ways was enlightening for the industry and students alike.

Vijay Chordia, President, EPIP, spoke on the various ways in which industry can collaborate with the government, of which the Design Clinic can be the starting point.

Abhishek Haritwal, MD Haritsons, spoke on what ails the jewelry industry. In the context of "Newer definitions of Jewelry: Recent Industrial Initiatives in Design Development", he spoke of the initiatives that he has undertaken in his organization. He emphasized that effective communication is the key to good design, especially in the context of global economy.

Benoy Thumpoonkal, Dean ARCH Academy of Design, highlighted the significance of academia in this whole process. He reiterated that when industry, government and educational institutions work together on a common platform, not only does the industry benefit, but also the students- the future generation of the country.

Tarang Arora, Amrapali Jewels, spoke on the emotional and cultural significance of jewelry in Indian and global perspective. He also elucidated on the latest trends in the jewelry industry, both abroad and domestic.

The speakers and participants were quite enthusiastic about the scheme and have extended their support, of which we are in the process of harnessing into the next step- need assessment survey.

ARCH begins Need Assessment Survey and Design Awareness Program with jewelry cluster in the old city from 4 March 2011 onwards
After the success of the design awareness seminar, in the second stage, the design expert/s generates design information about products, market scenario, technology, communication, research & development, and various industrial functions along with human factor study for ergonomics, safety, convenience, learning and skill up gradation through design research. Also, the programme provides design remedies for identified opportunities through design clinic workshop. The workshop helps participants to understand the holistic scenario of cluster and benefit them with the support of design expert/s, for design intervention in opportunity areas explored during the programme.

ARCH is empanelled with NID and MSME to conduct the Design Clinic Scheme for the jewelry cluster in Jaipur. In joint collaboration with Access Development Services, Jaipur and Jan Kala Sahitya Manch Sanstha (JKSMS), under JJADE Project, ARCH inaugurated its Need Assessment Survey and Design Awareness Program under the Design Clinic Scheme, with the jewelers in the old city.

The need assessment survey is the second part of the Design Clinic scheme. ARCH had conducted the first part- a design awareness seminar in January, where noted jewelers from the industry spoke alongside MSME and NID officials.

This survey reviews the existing infrastructure and business potential of these jewelers- so that ARCH can provide inputs for developing their businesses through design led development.
