DesignAbility – 5 days Workshop

As a part of augmenting a "Design Culture" within the school scholars, ARCH College has designed a 5 Days Workshop on "Design Ability" whereinthe intent will be to integrate creative and design thinking skills with Analytical and Critical thinking for application within the K12 ecosystem.

In the current scenario within India or the world, the importance of Design, i.e. innovative application of knowledge for the benefit of humanity at large and its environment, is of prime importance. Design is converting ideas into reality and other forms of human activity, aiming to fulfil human needs, where the most important attributes are combination of creative, critical and analytical design thinking skills.

For Educators:

The workshop will familiarize and train educators in delivering fundamental concepts of design thinking, making education much more meaningful and fun in the present scenario and building a deeper understanding of future opportunities & challenges, be it in any career domains of sciences, arts, or commerce.

For Students:

Here, the training would be in making the students look at various things from different perspectives and sensitizing them towards being empathetic for a much better understanding of the actual felt needs of people in order to come up with creative and effective design solutions Simple exercises will help to develop a deeper understanding of the concept.

The Strategic role of design is now universally recognized. Design plays a pivotal role in enhancing economic & social development.

The 5-week course has been planned for design aspirants who are keen on understanding Design & are ready to be a part of ‘design-enabled innovative economy’. The course will take one through a journey towards deeper explorations of design methodologies that help arriving at innovative and effective design solutions for the specific needs. Peer learning groups of 5 shall be formed for sharing, learning and carrying out projects.

Through various examples, case studies and assignments, one will explore and find answers to questions like:

  • What is Design?
  • Why is Design Important?
  • What is Design Thinking & how is it useful in creatively solving user centric design problems.
  • How to generate ideas to develop new Products or systems.

Creative Calligraphy

Many impressive fonts that we use on computers are a result of a deeper understanding of calligraphic practices. This course will introduce learners to the art of Calligraphy through several exercises/tasks. The learner is sensitized to letter spaces visually, and learn to create Chancery lettering. Using the skills learnt earlier as well adding your creative ideas you can further experiment in Calligraphic Art.

Through this course, the learner will start lessons from basic brush strokes till they can create calligraphy works on their own.

Creative Photography

Photography is an art form like drawing and painting, the difference being only that it uses a sophisticated technological device to capture moments that often regular vision misses It helps us see life in a different way, feel emotions, and record stories and events.

This course concentrates on basic photography techniques, aesthetics and communication through the medium. Students learn the basics of digital photography through a series of assignments. This course will helpdeveloping the principles of aesthetics and visual communication that are needed for creative photography.

Students will demonstrate through knowledge and application of DSLR camera techniques for capture of still imagery using creative photography.

Design Thinking

Design thinking is a process for creative problem solving. It combines what's desirable from a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable. The training here would be in developing sensitivity towards being empathetic for a much better understanding of the actual felt needs of people.

This module on 'Design Thinking' will focus on the following outline:

  • Different types of Thinking: Lateral Thinking, Creative thinking, Critical Thinking, Business Thinking, Design Thinking and their interrelationships.

Elements of Design

Elements of Design

The Elements of Design ... or the Sensory Properties are the building blocks of art. Artists use the elements to express their ideas, just as a writer uses words to express ideas. The Elements of Design are sometimes called Sensory Properties because the viewer can sfeel them with their senses. The basic elements of design are as follows:

LINE, COLOUR, SHAPE, NEGATIVE SPACE, TEXTURE, TYPOGRAPHY, SCALE, HIERARCHY, CONTRAST, EMPHASIS and HARMONY. With the understanding of these basic elements, one can make creative and innovative works in graphics, products, fashion, or any other design domains.

This course will help students to understand the concept of the design and its element in the real sense, create and understand the design process. It will sensitize and make the learner aware how Designers, Architects think, conceptualize, visualize and work on Design solutions. The course will describe the relationship of form and content, as well as form and function. Explain the different sources that influence a designer's perception of the visual world. The Elements and Principles are essential to understanding, interpreting and talking about art.

Idea Generation

In a creative process, ‘out of box’ thinking is highly necessary. To generate better solutions for contemporary needs, new scenarios have to be constantly imagined. Design deals a great deal with the future.

Apart from following the design methods for arriving at usable product ideas, a unique, effective and successful design depends largely on the ability to think creatively. Idea generation module trains students to think creatively using various techniques such as Brain storming techniques, Mind mapping, SCAMPER, inspirations from nature, etc. Ability to make sketches of ideas in mind. This will help in Understanding various techniques for idea generation, Improving sketching skills to represent ideas, Ability to view and understand things from different perspectives, Appreciation of nature’s way of creation, Ability to generate different forms from inspirations, Understanding how drawing helps visualization of potentially good ideas.

Typography

Typography makes designs more professional and attractive. It is a style in which they are arranged strategically in regards to the color, images, fonts, etc. Typography is not only to make a text look attractive but also it does the marketing of the content. Typography consist of four elements including typeface, font, leading, and kerning. Typography helps in increasing the effectiveness of a brand and eradicates a bad use experience. Typography also expresses the content by using the fondant and the styles. It is a way to express the content to the reader and increase their interests in reading it even further. Typography has a lot of benefits and importance which will be explained in the headings below.

This course is aimed at exposing students to these important aspects of the subject from the design perspective.
